HEATH, Ohio - Police said that the search for the man who escaped from a secure psych ward of a nursing home facility on Thursday morning has prompted several schools to close for the day.
Cherry Valley Elementary School announced it was sending students home for the day. Earlier, all Heath City Schools canceled classes.
According to police, John Stroud disappeared from the Heath Nursing and Convalescent Home, located at 717 S. 30th Street at about 5:15 a.m.
Staff at the facility found Stroud's window was broken out, 10TV News reported.
Health City Schools Superintendent Tom Foreman said that investigators told him about the escape at about 7 a.m. Foreman said that Stroud, 53, is believed to be dangerous and was last seen heading north along 30th Street.
Children who were on Heath school buses at the time were taken home for the day, 10TV News reported.
According to police, Stroud was brought to the facility by the Scioto County Sheriff's Office in March 2011 for a pending case in which he was charged with attempted murder for shooting at a police officer in Portsmouth. Stroud's stay at the facility was a condition of his bond, 10TV News reported.
In addition to the attempted murder charge, Stroud was charged with felonious assault and inducing panic.
In April 2011, Stroud pleaded not guilty to all three charges, by reason of insanity, 10TV News reported.
Stroud was scheduled to appear for a competency hearing in May.

Email To Channel 10 News by Kimberly Koerber-Bauer-Koerber
April 12, 2012
Dear Channel 10 News,
The Greyhound Bus depot, which seems to be a constant source of activity has people causing trouble there incessantly, say workers from there. Greyhound had gotten into improvements, which have been ignored by the media totally. Greyhound, as part of a major improvements area, eliminated five seat rows, to allow for more leg room. In addition to this, there is a new 'incentive card' for frequent travelers on the bus, to get free tickets and a 'companion ticket' to accompany a purchased ticket after acquiring a certain number of points on the new established "Incentive to use Greyhound" system.
Workers at the Greyhound station say that they have been constantly hounded by people leaving the area lately, more than coming into the Columbus, Ohio area. Also, as they say |"It takes all kinds, and some of the kinds are nuts" applies here, also.
Because I and my fiancé were staying at The Motel One, and because I have no job thanks to being racketeered by the Calli cocaine cartel (another thing that the media refuses to cover in Columbus, Ohio - by the way), I and my fiancé were at The Greyhound Station live last night and will be leaving on a bus from there tonight. When the news story was on about a mentally ill man escaping this morning, another mentally ill man was 'cruising around' the Greyhound Station wearing nylon printed women's pajama bottoms with weird shoes on and messed up hair. This was not the same man mentioned on channel ten news, over whom three local elementary schools were shut down because of.
In addition to the aforementioned activity there, crooks are still showing up there to fight with certain people who they know are part of the police/intelligence network to 'remove the people' so that fraud games, including using the victim's credentials, can be continued.
Personally, I think the media should be sued for creating such a big cover-up in regard to Calli, a drug operation which should have been busted up here in Ohio years ago. Channel ten must also be on the old |"payola System" as exhibited by their inactivity there. Since we have no train system here in Columbus, Ohio, and the COTA terminal is separate here in Columbus, Ohio, neglecting the Greyhound station and the improvements is an obvious strategic play.
"Thanks Be To God" that in the United States we cannot be shot or locked up for voicing our opinions despite the infusion of many International Cultural systems locally and Internationally which do not support the same agenda.
Warm Regards,
Kimberly Koerber-Bauer-Koerber

RE: Web breaking news tip for 10TV.com 1 Web breaking news tip for 10TV.com Thank you for sharing your concerns with us. You outlined several in your email, including the lack of coverage regarding Greyhound and its improvements. We have not received a new release from Greyhound regarding these upgrades of which you speak. Other transportation entities such as the local airports, and COTA often send us new releases and we decide coverage based on their impact on our viewers and the larger community. As for security at the bus station, any disturbances as you described should be reported to the train system’s security office. You also spoke of the Calli Cocaine Cartel. We are not familiar with any such criminal organization. If you have any information regarding this or recent activity, please provide it to us. We will look into it. Again, thank you for reaching out to 10TV. This is the type of response received when complaints are filed always, also known as a 'red flag'. The list of recipients above was created by this woman, Tonya McCleary, who I do not know. This is the way Ann Higgins, who worked at Madison County Hospital in London, Ohio also acted. These people seem to have some kind of mental disability and are abusive to boot. In addition to this, they are generally some kind of wisecracker, and self important.
