Byron Brown |
Mayor Byron Brown - Buffalo NY's 58th Mayor
****************************************************************************
I just returned from Buffalo, NY. Buffalo currently has in office as the incumbent Mayor Byron Brown (pictured). The following is from the city of Buffalo's web site:
"Elected Mayor with over 60 percent of the vote in the November 2005 General Election, Mayor Brown came into office emphasizing greater accountability and efficiency in City Hall, improving the quality of life for all city residents and a commitment to strengthening and expanding the city’s economic development activities.
Since taking office, Mayor Brown has followed those three guiding principles by launching a Zero Tolerance Law Enforcement initiative targeting quality of life crimes, along with other criminal activity in the city; implemented the management accountability tracking CitiStat Buffalo program, which monitors city departments’ service delivery activities on a weekly basis; and reconfigured the city’s economic development activities by creating the Department of Economic Development, Permit and Inspection Services, a change that has provided greater coordination and cooperation in all development activities taking place in the City of Buffalo."
Public opinion of Mayor Brown, though, after having him in office is this:
1. The East side Buffalo, NY drug cartel is still going on - the Mayor, with his law and order rhetoric, seems to have not tried to make a dent in it.
2. The old south side commission http://www.southbuffalo.info/ is not doing it's job. A crisis shut down the commission. For some reason, in that area, crooks decided that setting people's homes in fire, ripping things off (like musical instruments that a south side neighbor has in his home), ignoring people, avoiding events there, barricading oneself into one's home, Satanism in churches, and shutting down the steel industry without replacing it with the obvious thing due to indicators (Father Baker at the Catholic Basilica there, Jim and Tammy Baker - the right wing ministers, and Baker from Wooster Ohio and his wife Kathryn who are in the construction industry) were not supposed to get South side Buffalo residents active in trying to get funding for and to establish a commercial bakery - or expand Kaufman's Bakery - already there.
3. Is Mayor Brown "waiting for the world to change?", as the song goes, without doing any of the work for the place? Maybe old mob activity was too strong and too heavy and shut things down there forever - and no one is brave enough to be there to 'stick it out' and get things going again.
4. Police Reorganization there in Buffalo is very important, as is First Initiave Stimulus Funding, but there has been little or no action of this. Brown does not appear at press conferences, they say. Brown was not endorsed through the Urban League of Buffalo, they say. Another candidate was picked they say, and Brown is supposed to be some kind of New York sharpie from New York, New York's banking community. (Interesting stuff - this informal polling or public opinion.) Someone is waiting for the old South side Commission to become active again - but violence and other things shut the commission down to begin with, sadly.
Buffalo is another huge city to manage. I was not thrilled to have to leave the area and not be able to work though some of the issues there because of the person I went there with being bitter, mean, and wanting to leave because of having a fight with the person we were staying with, who was supposed to be his friend. This is a personal example of what occurs - because that person is from Buffalo. What I would say about this is one comment in agreement with another victim - B.P. in the oil wars area - "Offshore Drilling spoils everything". Case closed.

A special point of interest: Grandma Brown's baked beans really are a New York state favorite food. They were found in a local convenience store there in Buffalo, NY. http://www.tasteofcny.com/ixxocart/products/Grandma_Brown_s_Baked_Beans_case-36-9.html
